Frequently Asked Questions
Things we get asked a lot!
Do I (or my builder) need special skills to build with Grid-WALL?
If your builder can run a saw and a level, he can build with Grid-WALL.
It is forgiving of changes and errors until it is filled with concrete.
With so much concrete in the walls, how well does the insulation
properties compare with traditionally built wood framed walls?
Grid-WALL’s combination of insulation and thermal mass creates a
structure that can reduce energy consumption over 50% as compared to
traditionally built wood framed walls.
Will the styrofoam in the blocks burn?
Even though our blocks are made of 85% styrofoam, they will not
support combustion. See a video demonstration of how well this
material performs when it is exposed directly to the flames of a blow
torch.
Your blocks are square. How difficult is it to create curved
surfaces or arches?
Grid-WALL is actually one of the easiest systems available to create
any kind of curved surface. The curved design is drawn onto the
blocks, the line is cut, and a thin piece of flexible fiberboard is
inserted. This stops the flow of cement during the pour.
Afterwards, the fiberboard and the material below it is removed, leaving
perfect arcs.
The blocks can be cut to create custom angles quickly and easily,
making any curved or angular wall possible with little difficulty.
More information is available in the construction section
Does it take longer to build with Grid-WALL?
Erection time is cut with the Grid-WALL system. It goes up FAST
and EASY.
What about termites?
Termites and other insects cannot eat or burrow into Grid-WALL. No
insecticide additive is necessary for our blocks.
Do I need to stagger the blocks like bricks?
No! But you MAY stagger them, if you prefer, so long at the voids are
aligned. Stacking the blocks straight up is the preferred method. It is more critical
that the holes line up to create the solid concrete gridwork.
Straight stacking means the inner grid
work will be aligned, which is imperative in this construction method,
but it also makes bracing more convenient. It is much easier
to brace the vertical seams if they align. More information about
this particular method of bracing is
available here
How much concrete does it take to fill the blocks?
It takes about 1 cubic yard of concrete to fill about 100 sq. feet of
wall area.
Do I use #4 rebar in every hole?
All plans should be reviewed by an engineer. The usual placement is
#4 rebar horizontally and vertically. In some areas you might use less,
it just depends upon the engineering.
Do I need to put up wood strips to put up sheetrock?
No. Glue and screw sheetrock directly to Grid-WALL™.
What about Plumbing and Electrical? Can
they go inside the walls?
Yes. Use conduit for electrical wiring and
place the electrical conduit and the plumbing in the voids prior to
pouring the concrete. More details and photos available
here
