Supporting the Second Floor

A ledger board may be placed against the wall with long bolts going into the voids (concrete). Once the concrete is poured, joist hangars may be used to support the floor beams.

Alternate Method

Another way to secure ledger boards that will support a second floor is to cut notches into the wall 16" on center for the I beam or joist to slip into the middle of the block. Rest the beams on a temporary ledger board. Protect the end of the beam from the wet concrete by wrapping it in plastic wrap. Then, run a piece of rebar the length of the wall through the beams. This will tie the joists into the wall once the concrete is poured, each beam resting upon a concrete pillar.

Make sure this is PER ENGINEER'S DESIGN

Long bolts extending into the voids will bond the ledger board to the walls. Until they are filled with concrete, temporary supports are used to hold them in place.
